493: It might be inferred from Wood that the upper Oxus took its name of Penj from the five small hillocks crowned with forts, which are met with below the junction of the two main streams, and which are called collectively Kileh Pertj (Wood, p. 329); but I believe in truth that the fort was named from the river. At any rate, the following quotations from a manuscript history of Khorassan, which I shall often have occasion to quote, prove beyond dispute that the Oxus was called Penj because it was supposed to be formed ef five rivers, «This mountain chain comes to a place called Penj-ab, where is the source of the Jihun (or Oxus)».... -In the neighbourhood of Khutlan and Waksh five large streams unite, on which account the place is called Penj-ab>...
Again, Davies says from Md. Amin, «five principal streams make up the Dariya-i-Penj, the name by which the Oxus is called, till it reaches Shighndn». 2) Report of a Mission to Yarkund, *стр. 271: Our camp was on the north edge of the Little Pamir Lake, which has been given by recent travellers the very different names of Barkut Yassin, Chalap, and Gez Kul or Goose Lake (Turki, Oi-Kul). I made repeated enquiries as to its proper name, and found that the Wakhis generally call it the Kul-i-Pamir Khurd, or lake of Little Pamir, while the Sarikolis and Ydrkandis give it the name of Oi-Knl.
