headwork section (78 km) has a rated discharge of 175 cu.m per second and the operational section (87 km) has a rafted discharge of 350 cu. m per second. In the headwork section of the canal there is a cascade of six pum- ping stations with an aggregate capacity of 450,000 kW which raise the water to a height of 132 metres. The pumping stations have 36 pumping units (30 operating pumps and 6 reserve pumps). The first 20 km of the headwork section of the canal till pumping station No, 1 run through the river flood- land with no seepage lining of the channel. The remaining 58 km of the section have been lined by concrete on top of polyethylene film. Pumping station No. 4 realizes water intake into е Ulyanov canal with a rated capacity of 65 cum per second for the irrigation of 59,000 hectares. The first stage of the land development project provides for the direct deli- very of water from the headwork section into the operational section of the Karshi Main Canal. The second stage will be realized with the help of the Talimardjan reservoir (now under construction) with a holding capacity of 1,600 million cum and pumping station No. 7. The reservoir will accumulate water during the autumn and winter seasons and deliver 150 cu.m of water per second ю the Karshi Main Canal during the growing season for the irrigation of 150,000 hectares of land in the Karshi Steppe. The third stage of the projeci provides for the irrigation and development of another half a million hectares of land. This will be realized after the cons- fruction of the Shorsai pumping canal which will be 152 km long and have a rated discharge of 350 cum per second. The pumping stations оп the canal will have an aggregate capacily of about 1 million kW. There is also to be built the Shorsai reservoir with a holding capacity of 1,500 million cu.m. The route of the Shorsai canal runs parallel fo the existing headwork secticn of the Karshi Main Canal fo a distance of 62 km and then it follows the Ulya- nov canal. A large production and construction industry has been set ир on the newly-developed land. Hundreds of kilomeires of highways, water mains and power fransmission lines have been laid in the Karshi Steppe. There are seve- ral big townships on the territory with cultural and communal complexes and indusirial enterprises. Up fo date something like 76,000 hectares of land have been opened for irrigated farming in the Karshi Steppe and by 1980 there will be 200,000 hectares under irrigation. It is planned to organize 27 cotton growing state farms on the land developed under the first stage of the project. Each farm will have belween 5,000 and 6,000 heciares of arable land. The project also envisages the orga- nization of 9 fruit and grape growing state farms, 2 live-stock breeding farms. The 9 existing cotton growing state farms will be reconstructed. The fotal length of the inter-farm canals will reach 200 km and the local disiribution network in the form of concrete flumes and pipes will run over 7,000 km. The closed horisontal drainage network will have a total length of 8,000 km and there are fo be 385 vetical drainage bore holes. Capital investment in the development of the Karshi Steppe will amount ю 1,380 million roubles and expenses will be justified in a maiter of 7—8 years.
