Russian expeditions to study the hydro resources of Kuhistan (late XIX early XX centuries)

The article briefly covers the history of the study of glaciers in the highlands of Central As ia, most of 
which are located on the territory of Tajikistan. This mountainous region is known as Kuhistan. The fir st 
expeditions to Kuhistan were sent immediately after Central Asia joined Russia (in 70 th  80th of the XIX 
century). The explorations had been conducted under hard conditions. The author shows the heroic deed o f 
Russian natural scientists (A P Fedchenko, I V Mushketov, V F Oshanin), who coped to reach deep in to 
Kuhistan and carry out topographic study of Pamir mountain ranges, Alai and Tien Shan mounts. The 
author shows how knowledge was gained gradually on the reserves of fresh water and water resources in the 
whole region. Thanks to these efforts, the map of the mountainous region was developed. The article states 
that the work of Russian explorers about the study of glaciers of Central Asia has  not lost its significance to 
the present day and is being widely used by modern scientists in many countries.
