The exien- U sive programme of irrigation construction that has been adopted in the republic envisages the further increase in the area of irrigated land апа improved irrigation facilities and water supply for existing irrigation systems. The Charvak Hydroengineering Complex has been constructed for irrigation and power production purposes. It is the upper stage of a planned three- stage cascade of hydropower stations in the middle reaches of the Chirchik river. The Charvak Hydroengineering Complex provides for the seasonal con- trol of the discharge п the Chirchik river in accordance with the require- ments of irrigation. It makes it possible to irrigate over 145,000 hectares of new land, facilitates flood control in the Chirchik river valley and improves winter operating conditions for the exisiing 16 hydropower stations of the Chirchik-Bozsu cascade which are locaied downstream. The Ch>rvak hydropower station has a capacity of 600,000 kW and its reservoir has a live capacity of 1,600 million cu. m of water. The station is infended to operate within the Cenfral Asian power grid. The hydroengineering complex comprises a rockfill dam, left-bank water spillway installations and a headwork and power generating unit on the right bank. The dam which is 168 melres high comprises a central loamy core, sand- clay transition zones and riprap benches on both sides. A twin arouting curtain has been installed fo a depth of 100 metres along the bottom and slopes of the gorge and blanket grouting has been conducted by means of cementing to a depth of 12 melres. The rated floodwater discharge of 2,400 cu.m per second is let through the spillways and the power house. The spillway installations include a shaft type emergency spillway and a tunnel. These installations are connected with е common drainage facilily — a non-pressure gallery of a round section which turns info an open and concrele-lined canal with a stilling installation а# the end. The headwork and power generating unit comprises an abyssal wafer inlake, two headrace tunnels and a power house with a short tailrace canal. The headrace canals have a diameire of 9 meires each. They are located at two levels and at the power house form four pipes. Four 150,000 kW turbines have been installed at the power house and the power stafion operates in an irrigation egimen,
